Jane Austen Quilt – Update #1

Thanks for all your comments yesterday, everyone! And thanks especially to Nicole at www.sisterschoice.typepad.com for giving me a mention and getting you all heading over here (I am still figuring out how to put links in so please bear with me). Nicole is a great mentor, so if anyone is interested in starting up blogging, I recommend you get in touch with her.

Ok – here are some photos of my progress so far. These diamonds all have 1 1/2″ sides.

These diamonds are also 1 1/2″ but this is the pile of between 100 and 200 red diamonds. No more red I think!
Some of the un-sashed 3 1/2″ diamonds.
More 3 1/2″ diamonds.
And finally, the 3 1/2″  diamonds with sashing on them.
I tally all my patches in a little exercise book so i don’t have to go counting diamonds all the time. The current count is:
  • 3 1/2″ diamonds – 169 out of 232
  • 3 1/2″ half diamonds (top to bottom) – 0 out of 22
  • 3 1/2″ half diamonds (across the centre) – 1 out of 24
  • 1 1/2″ X 3 1/2″ rhomboid for sashing – 79 out of 282
  • 1 1/2″ diamonds for sashing – 0 out of 323
  • 1 1/2″ diamonds for border – 603 out of 2200

As you can see, I still have a lot of work to do cutting and stitching. But the other day when I sat down and sewed up all those diamonds and sashing strips, I felt like I was finally starting the quilt. Sewing is what makes a project real for me 🙂 I am so excited about this project! I can’t wait to see it come together.

The good thing is that so far I have only bought 4 fat quarters for this quilt (white with black flowers, navy with cream flowers, solid green, solid pink). The rest was from my stash, which I am quite proud of!

I have this idea for the solid colour 3 1/2″ diamonds. I think I want to stitch my siblings’ and my names into some of them, and then when we eventually have kids, stitch their names in too, and possibly the names of our spouses (or we might have to share diamonds there…not sure yet). What do you all think?

Hope my American friends are having a great Thanksgiving!

A few months ago I embarked on a journey to make my very own Jane Austen quilt. I am following the pattern found on http://www.jasa.net.au.  I have decided to make this quilt for my parents for their 25th wedding anniversary in a few years (their 20th was this April gone). As the quilt uses 2200 1 1/2″ diamonds for the borders, you can see why I left this much time! I am getting there slowly…I have not cut all the shapes yet, but as I have a large number of 3 1/2″ diamonds cut, I have started putting the small sashing strips onto them. I’ll try and do a photo update each week – it will be interesting to eventually see what a pile of 2200 1 1/2″ diamonds looks like! I am glad I get to start sewing now 🙂 The quilt is a medallion style, worked around a central diamond with 33cm sides. I am still hunting for the perfect fabric for my medallion. I also thought I had more of my sashing fabric than I do, which is frustrating 😦 Any of you who are reading this – do you quilt? Do you craft at all?

Naturally,
Laura
